I love this quote from Gillian Mears about what makes her want to write:
Gillian Mears: an interview with the author of The Grass Sister and The Mint Lawn: Basically, I love putting things together. I love making compost, woolen rugs of little squares; I stockpile images, I'm a slave to a good image and addicted to the whole process of writing out snippets. I have magpie tendencies; I snaffle images, snatches of conversation, characteristics and reactions, and squirrel them away for later.

What I love is putting it all together within a context that means something to me. The satisfaction comes when a set of images that have been brewing find a home in the one story ... that might take years."

What would I do with the $5000 dollars if I win this year'sHerald Sun Short Story Competition?[17nov04]

Actually, I'm not sure what I'd do, but it would be frivolous and hedonistic.
I'll give it some thought.

I'd even settle for the 1000 dollar second prize.
