MIT World

I've now listened to all the writers that I've heard of on Wired for Books and a fair selection of the ones I haven't. Luckily for me Jill has alerted me to the videos of MIT world - a selection of lectures on arts, science, history, international affairs etc- all there for the downloading. I listened to the Maurice Sendak one some time ago when Claire linked to it. Today I may listen to the Seamus Heaney one or perhaps the Smart Mobs one.

Men and Dogs

There's a man I pass in the park near the MCG most mornings (at a more rapid pace since I've been riding the bike). Tall, thin, grey, walking two tall thin greyhounds. Sometimes he looks quite perky, smiles at other dog owners, wears stylish, yet casual clothes. Then on other days he looks almost mournful - he watches the path, keeps his baseball cap pulled down low over his eyes, his clothes tired and shabby.

Then today, a discovery. Two tall thin grey-haired men, four greyhounds, all in the park together. It was a strange sensation to see them both there together - like one man was meeting up with the actor who was to play him in a movie.

Awards Speeches

Well it's great news about Adam Ellliot winning the Oscar, especially given the competition. I liked his plug for SBS too; it made me laugh. I asked Thieu if he will profess his love for me when he wins an Oscar.
"No" he said "I'll be using my moment in the spotlight to make a political statement that will inevitably end with me being escorted off the stage."
I was unimpressed.
"Couldn't you get the bit about me in first? You know - "I'd like to thank my lovely girlfriend, Meredith, without whom this film never would have happened. And now, let me tell you what I think of George Bush."
He looked at me.
"Do you really want to be mentioned in a speech that ends up with the speaker being dragged off the stage by security?"
"It'd be worth it." I said.
